About Palmdale

Palmdale is an unincorporated community in Glades County, Florida, situated on US 27, just north of State Road 29. Originally part of DeSoto County, the area was pioneered by the Florida Fruit Farm Corporation and sold to the Palmdale Land Company, which then sold it to settlers, creating the first community in 1911. However, many early farmers left due to transportation issues, leaving their homes and belongings behind. Newcomers moved into these abandoned homes, but wildfires eventually destroyed many of them. The community was known for its hardworking and loyal residents. Early settlers included families like the Reans, Delaneys, and Snells. Churches were not built until the 1950s, and the first general store and post office were operated by H.C. Delaney, followed by others.

Palmdale experienced a brief economic boom in the 1920s with political rallies and barbecues that attracted hundreds of people. Oil drilling began in 1921 but ended unsuccessfully. The Lykes Brothers later developed recreational areas like Fisheating Creek Outpost. In the 1970s, John and Audrey Hartman started Hartman Nursery, known internationally for plant cloning. Palmdale is also home to Gatorama, featuring large crocodiles and alligators, and the Palmdale Horse Club, which offers trail rides and will soon provide Airbnb accommodations. Despite a fire destroying the historic Palmdale Cracker restaurant in 2016, the community remains vibrant and connected.
